A traditional filter, like our prefilter , works by passing all the water through it. The fine construct prevents larger particles from getting through and they are captured on the filter material.
The membranes allow the smaller water molecules to pass through, leaving salt and other impurities behind. Poseidon is a private, investor-owned company that develops water and wastewater infrastructure.

The units wouldn't produce the vast amounts of freshwater rendered by plants, but they would be self-contained, portable and powered by solar cells or batteries. It seems the future of desalination is wide open with different research institutions continually looking for ways to make the process more efficient and more cost effective.
