Rinnai heater where is the pilot light

You should hear a "whoosh" sound when the gas is lit. If you take off the little door below the ignition box, there will be a little window you can peek into to see if the there is a flame. If it's lit, finish up by putting the door back, turning the dial from Pilot to On, and turning the water temperature dial from Low to the setting you like. If it isn't lit, you'll need to start over right away to prevent gas build-up.

To light this type or water heater, I suggest grabbing a long barbecue lighter. The pilot will be a little tricky to reach otherwise. First, take off the plate that is below the box with dials on the side of the water heater.

There may also be an inner plate that you will need to slide to the side. Then, you should see a pipe s leading to a burner. Then wait for five minutes to let any remaining gas dissipate. Quickly hold the barbecue lighter over the end of the pipe by the burner. The flame should light instantly. Keep pressing the Pilot dial downward for around 30 seconds and turn the dial from Pilot to On. Try cleaning the thermocouple and then relighting the pilot light.

If it continues to go out, the thermocouple might need to be replaced. Thermocouples experience wear and tear over time. If your pilot light is flickering and faint, you might need to adjust the flame. Find the screw for your pilot that will adjust the strength of the flame.

It could also be sending a bad signal to the thermocouple. This too will require you adjusting the flame. You can check to see by looking at the pressure gauge on the supply tank. Over time, the tip of your pilot can become corroded with soot. When this happens, it blocks the flow of gas through the supply line. The pilot light provides a small flame that ignites the gas needed to operate the appliance.

So what happens if the pilot light goes out on one of your heating appliances? Does the gas keep flowing? If the pilot light goes out on a storage or instantaneous hot water heater, space heater or a ducted heater, you will not have a gas leak.

This is because all modern gas appliances with pilot lights have a fail-safe device that closes off the gas to the appliance in the case when the pilot may go out. The fail-safe device is comprised of a thermocouple. When the tip of the Thermocouple is heated in the pilot flame, it generates a small electric current. This electric current energises an electromagnet that in turn keeps a gas valve open allowing gas to flow to the main burner.

If the pilot light goes out for any reason, the current stops, the valve closes, thus preventing any gas from leaking. High-efficiency gas appliances like Rinnai Infinity hot water units, Rinnai Energysaver space heaters or Brivis Starpro ducted heaters are different. We find that these are all very safe and reliable appliances.

If you own an older gas appliance it may even be time to think about getting it replaced by a licensed plumber to avoid problems and keep you and your family safe.
